The NA 28

The 28th Edition of the Novum Testamentum Graece (Nestle-Aland)

The preparation of this edition involved two main tasks: First, the critical apparatus was thoroughly revised to make it clearer and easier to use. Second, the text-critical findings and decisions that had emerged from work on the Editio Critica Maior (ECM) had to be considered.
This first aim was, for example, achieved by:

  • eliminating the distinction between primary and secondary consistently cited witnesses,
  • separating combined variant readings,
  • visually clarifying the distinction between different variants,
  • incorporating the readings of Papyri 117–127 into the apparatus, which is of particular importance for the Acts of the Apostles.

The alignment with the Editio Critica Maior (ECM) applied to the Catholic Epistles (James–Jude), as the ECM was only available at the time for these writings. This resulted in:

  • a complete revision of the apparatus for this section of the New Testament,
  • over 30 textual changes, some of which significantly affected the meaning (e.g., Jude 5).

The cross-references in the margin have also been systematically revised and supplemented, mainly with references to early Jewish literature.
