The Gute Nachricht Bibel

The Gute Nachricht Bibel (Good News Bible) is a modern German translation with a focus on clarity, accessibility, and ecumenical use. It was the first “communicative” German Bible edition and marked a significant shift in translation practice. Its aim is to render the biblical message understandable to contemporary readers without requiring previous experience with the Bible. The translation is based on the original Hebrew and Greek texts, yet it adopts a dynamic‐equivalence approach, prioritising meaning and readability over strict literalism. Work on the translation began in the 1960s, with the New Testament published in 1968 and the complete Bible in 1982.

The Gute Nachricht Bibel is officially overseen by the Protestant and Catholic Bible societies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and remains the only German Bible with a consistent inter-confessional background. Its language is intentionally modern, making it particularly suited for religious education, youth ministry and personal devotional reading. Over time, the translation has seen revisions aimed at reflecting contemporary linguistic usage and integrating advances in biblical scholarship.

Its wide range of editions—tailored for different audiences—ensures that the Bible text remains consistent while providing options in format and supplementary features. The inter-confessional character and emphasis on communication render it a valuable resource in academic contexts, especially where one seeks a readable German Bible translation that is not bound to a single denominational tradition.
